Direct answer

Yes, often, when it comes to housing disrepair. Wales has its own housing law (the Renting Homes (Wales) Act 2016), and most renters in Wales now have "occupation contracts" instead of tenancies. We may still be able to help with serious disrepair like damp, mould, leaks or no heating. For Welsh-only issues like notices and contracts, the people to call are Shelter Cymru on 0345 075 5005. For your disrepair, call us free on 0800 030 4669.

What is different about housing in Wales

The Renting Homes (Wales) Act 2016, which came into force at the end of 2022, replaces older tenancy law in Wales. Most renters now have an "occupation contract" instead of a tenancy. Many of the same ideas apply (the landlord must keep the home in repair and fit to live in), but the rules and notices are slightly different.

What stays the same

Your landlord in Wales must still:

  • Keep your home in repair (a Welsh equivalent of Section 11 applies through the Act)
  • Make sure it is fit to live in
  • Carry out gas and electrical safety checks

Who to call for Welsh-only issues

  • Shelter Cymru: 0345 075 5005, for advice on contracts, possession notices (including Section 173 "no fault" notices), and homelessness in Wales.
  • Citizens Advice Cymru: for general advice in Welsh and English.
