Your landlord must keep gas appliances, pipes and flues safe, and get them checked every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer. They must give you a copy of the gas safety record. If you can smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service now on 0800 111 999. If a gas appliance or your heating is broken or unsafe and your landlord ignores it, call us free on 0800 030 4669.

What your landlord must do

  • Arrange a gas safety check every 12 months by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Give you a copy of the gas safety record (sometimes called a CP12) within 28 days of the check, or at the start of a new tenancy.
  • Keep gas boilers, fires, cookers, pipes and flues in safe working order.
  • Fix unsafe or broken gas appliances.

If you smell gas or think there is a leak

  1. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away.
  2. Open doors and windows.
  3. Turn the gas off at the meter if you can.
  4. Do not turn anything electrical on or off, including light switches.
  5. Get fresh air, and leave the property if you feel unwell.
